5 A Day: Healthy Eating Guide

UK Government Healthy Eating Recommendations

Over a third of your diet should come from fruit and vegetables.
Aim for at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day. A portion is 80 g or one of the following:

  • A slice of a large fruit such as a melon
  • A whole piece of fruit such as an apple or banana
  • Two pieces of small fruit such as satsumas
  • Three heaped tablespoons of cooked vegetables
  • A bowl of mixed salad

Tip: Limit fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies to a total of 150 ml per day, and consume them with meals to reduce tooth decay.

Dried fruit counts too! 30 g (about 1 heaped tablespoon) of dried fruit also counts as one portion—eat it at mealtimes rather than as a snack to protect your teeth.
